When “Not Yet” Is the Best Advice We Can Give

Ever had someone ready to buy, pre-approved, excited—and still said, “Let’s wait”? We have.

A few months ago, a young couple reached out to us, full of energy and hope. They had just gotten pre-approved and were eager to start shopping for their first home in Portland. We met them for coffee in St. Johns, heard about their goals, and even previewed a few listings in 97203. On paper, everything checked out. But something just didn’t feel settled for them.

As we walked through a cute bungalow with a great yard, I noticed they weren’t talking to each other the way excited buyers usually do. Later that evening, I called and gently asked how they were really feeling. After a pause, they admitted that while they were financially “ready,” they weren’t emotionally there yet. One of them had just switched jobs, and the other was still unsure if Portland was their long-term home.

So we had an honest conversation. I told them, “You’re not missing the market—you’re gaining clarity.” We pressed pause. No pressure, no fear tactics, just space.

Fast forward to last week—they called to say thank you. They’d decided to rent for another year, save a bit more, and revisit the idea once they felt more rooted. They said the conversation reminded them that real estate isn’t just about transactions. It’s about timing—and trust.

That moment reinforced something we believe deeply: real estate is about relationships, not rush. We’re not here to push anyone into the next step. We’re here to walk with you at your pace, even if that means stepping back.

Because in Portland real estate—especially in neighborhoods like St. Johns or Alberta—timing can be everything. And having an agent who listens instead of hurries? That can make all the difference.

If you’re thinking about buying or selling in the Portland area, we’d love to be part of your story.
