The Showing That Surprised Us All

Sometimes the homes we think will be a perfect match…aren’t. And sometimes the “just in case” showings turn out to be the ones that change everything.

Not long ago, I was working with buyers who had been very clear about their must-haves: newer construction, low maintenance, and a modern feel. We lined up several Portland homes that fit the description. At the end of the list, I suggested one more—an older Craftsman in Woodstock that didn’t check all their boxes but had great bones and a warm feel. They agreed, mostly out of courtesy.

As soon as we stepped inside, something shifted. The buyers, who had been polite but reserved all afternoon, suddenly lit up. They commented on the woodwork, the character, the way the sunlight poured through the dining room windows. It wasn’t what they thought they wanted—but it was exactly what felt like home.

They didn’t end up buying that specific house (the timing wasn’t right), but the showing changed our entire search. From then on, we looked with fresh eyes, open to homes with personality and heart, not just the newest finishes.

That day reminded me that in Portland real estate, it’s not just about the checklist. It’s about listening—really listening—to what stirs something in people when they walk through the door.
